Haumana PosterThe Indie smash hit from Hawai`i comes to Nevada City, spreading the spirit of aloha! After many months of preparation Ka Hale Hula O Pilialohaokalani O Hilo is honored to present this film, with permission from Hula Nation Filmworks. Directed by Keo Woolford, the film is thought to be based on a true story about how a now well-known Kumu Hula (master hula teacher) found his ancestral roots as a young man during the resurgence of Hawaiian culture during the 1970’s.

Saturday – March 8, 2014 @ 1:00 PM
The Magic Theatre
107 Argall Way
Nevada City, CA

Film Synopsis from THE HAUMĀNA website:

Jonny Kealoha is the charismatic host of a struggling Waikiki Polynesian lū`au show. To everyone’s surprise, including his own, he is appointed as the successor to a high school boy’s hula class when his former Kumu Hula passes away. He becomes as much a student as a teacher through the demands of leading the boys to a significant cultural event and rediscovers the sanctity of the culture he had previously abandoned.

With choreography and cultural consulting by Robert Cazimero, Lanakila Casupang, Maelia Loebenstein-Carter and Kaipo Hale the film is a not only a tribute to a culture so many love, but a view into the world of Hula.

Purchase tickets early. This event will sell out and tickets WILL NOT be sold at the door.

Tickets are $12 and must be purchased in advance at The BriarPatch box office in Grass Valley or by phone at (530) 913-4553.

What’s a Pūpū?

It’s a word that catches the ear – and the imagination – but if you look up the Hawaiian word ‘pūpū’ several meanings are revealed. One definition for “pūpū” is a general name for marine and land shells, but really the commonly known reference is ‘a relish, appetizer, canapé, hors dʻoeuvre; formerly, the fish, chicken, or banana served with kava’.

Experience Pūpū’s and Island Music

Though kava is not on the menu for Hula in the Mountains, there will be plenty ono-licious (really yummy) traditional, island-style appetizers during the VIP Pūpū Hour preceding the Hula Show. This year the VIP Pūpū Hour kicks off at 5:30 pm with live music by Koa Young and Gary Cambra, two local musicians with big Hawaiian roots. VIP Pūpū Hour ticket holders get the best advanced seating to the evening show and early shopping at the Island craft booths. Get ticket info.

The Pūpū Menu

Heavy appetizers provided this year include Polynesian meatballs, teriyaki chicken, kalua pork, macaroni salad, coconut rice balls, vegetarian pesto wraps, pineapple canoes, fruit and veggie platters, and mai tai ʻmocktailsʻ complete with an umbrella! (No alcohol served.)

We hope to see you there for a taste of the Islands, a little talk-story, amazing hula dancing, and lots of surprises.  Aloha!
